Michigan woman to serve prison sentence for federal drug charges

On Behalf of Michael A. Rataj, PC | Dec 9, 2022 | Federal Drug Charge

Federal charges typically come with steeper penalties than other types of crimes, and those convicted of any federal-level allegation could spend significant time behind bars. There are certain types of drug crimes that are federal offenses due to certain factors, such as drug trafficking. One Michigan woman was recently sentenced to nine years in federal prison for her role in certain types of drug-related crimes.

Repercussions for intent to distribute

The woman pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute more than one kilogram of fentanyl. The prosecutor in the case stated that his office was committed to prosecuting trafficking-related cases to the fullest extent of the law. The defendant was originally arrested in March 2022 after an investigation by the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team.

The investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant that allowed law enforcement to search her home, her personal vehicle and her father’s residence. Investigators believed she was storing products in her dad’s home. The search resulted in the discovery of narcotics on her person and in the two residences. The prosecution accused her of being a street-level dealer working for a larger operator.

What type of defense is best?

When facing serious federal drug charges, a Michigan defendant will benefit from having experienced legal counsel. Even when there is significant evidence against a defendant, he or she has the right to seek the best possible outcome to the situation. Whether entering a guilty plea or fighting the charges in court, knowledgeable counsel is critical.
