Federal drug charges are no joke

On Behalf of Michael A. Rataj, PC | Mar 6, 2021 | Federal Drug Charge

Every day, it seems, you read stories about individuals being arrested in the Detroit area on drug-related charges. Many of them are not just facing charges at the state level; they are facing federal drug charges, which carry far worse penalties if they are ultimately convicted. If you happen to be one of the many individuals arrested and charged with committing a federal drug crime, the steps you take right off the bat can dramatically affect the outcome of your case.

Seek help sooner rather than later

The sooner you seek help after your arrest, the better. You do not want to deal with federal agents and prosecutors on your own. They are not on your side. The good news is you have the right to request an attorney at any point. That is a request that must be honored once it is made.

Defense strategy

Various defensive strategies may prove helpful in your case. Legal counsel can go over them with you, explain the benefits of each and help you determine which would best benefit your circumstances. If case dismissal is not in your future, the goal will be to achieve the best outcome possible — which could mean a number of things.

You may not have to go to trial

Many federal cases are handled without having to go to trial. It is often possible to reach a plea agreement with prosecuting attorneys which means any consequences you face could be greatly reduced. In some cases, going to trial may serve your best interests. If that is the case in your situation, legal counsel can help you get through it.
